Hands-on Workshop on Basics of Geographic Information System (GIS)

Certificate Training Programme on improving your skills in basic GIS

Duration and Venue
The technical workshop will be held from 10th to 12th February 2020 at the Indian Institute of Bank Management, Jawahar Nagar, Khanapara, Guwahati.

Background to the Workshop
Have you ever wondered how the beautiful maps that depict regions, continents or more are done? Have you been longing to learn to create maps for your project? Here is an opportunity for you to learn basics of map making commonly called as Geographic Information System or GIS.

Mapping is a method of representing objects spatially. In ecology, marking a field observation of a species to tracing an animal movement to modeling ecological niche of a species, knowledge of mapping becomes quite essential. “Basics of GIS” aims to equip the participants with essentials of mapping, offering insights and hands-on exposure to working with various free-and-open-source mapping applications. The program would help participants to appreciate the key concepts, enabling them to quickly learn, test and apply the techniques in their respective domains and eventually be able to produce maps for their own needs.

Course Structure

The programme covers
Session 1: Fundamentals of Mapping
Session 2: Geospatial data – Resources and repositories
Session 3: QGIS: Installation and Overview
Session 4: Data visualization using QGIS
Session 5: Data analysis using QGIS
Session 6: Map production using QGIS

Tools exposed: We will use open source GIS – QGIS software, Google Earth Pro®, GPS Essentials (for Android phones) throughout the programme.
